Skim reading

The basic meaning of the word "skim" is to remove something from the surface of a liquid, e.g. to skim the fat off the top of the milk.

Skim reading means that you leaf (browse) through a text (an article, a book, etc.) very quickly in order to get an overall picture of what it is. Such an overall picture helps your brain deal with the information it is going to analyse, assess, and process when you start working your way through the text to understand, learn, and remember.
 

Here is what to look for:
 
punkt a table of contents
punkt a summary (abstract)
punkt titles, subtitles, and headings
punkt the first and last paragraph of each chapter (part)
punkt pictures, illustrations, and graphs
